How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are important to your home’s beauty and comfort; they offer a beautiful view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your house. Because they are so important to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they can continue to do their job well.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but lucky for you glass cleaning isn’t difficult. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that it make it less painful to clean the exterior of your windows from the inside of your house, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors recommends:

  1. Begin by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that gathers on the sill and ledges will remain there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces in. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from a variety of different directions for the best clean.
  4. After the cleaning, let your windows air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your beautiful view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
